Cortaid Poison

how do you get poison ivy to go away?

i got poison ivy the other day and i’m using cortaid cream to make it stop itching. but how do i make it go away completely?

Antihistamines like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are good for stopping the itching and help to dry up the blisters. Benadryl can be bought without a perscription in most places. If you have a severe reaction seeing your physician would be the best remedy. You may need cortisone pills to help clear it up.
There are several home remedies that can be used in the treatment of poison ivy that will help the itching and help it to heal. Some may work better than others for each individual person.

1. Baking soda is a classic homemade cure made by mixing 3 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water until a thick paste forms. Apply to the rash and let dry. This is the one that works the best with my son whom gets into the poison plants while working in the woods. Another tried-and-true method for many poison ivy sufferers is full immersion in a soothing baking soda bath.

2. Sprinkle vinegar liberally on rash or blisters for instant relief from itch. Although the smell may not be to everybody’s liking, vinegar seems to help draw out the “poison” from poison ivy while it also helps healing. White distilled vinegar, or apple cider vinegar, seem to work best.

3. The inside of a banana peel rubbed on poison ivy rashes seems to bring instant, cooling relief and is felt by many to be a homemade “miracle cure”. Banana skins may even do the trick when all other poison ivy treatments fail.

4. Dishwashing liquid’s anti-grease agents make it a common-sense and one of the most practical remedies for poison ivy especially after the initial contact to wash off the oil (urushiol) produced by the poison ivy that causes the allergic reaction. Apply liberally from the bottle at full strength. Simply wash off with cool water. Don’t use hot water as that will increase irritation and make the poison ivy itch worse.

5. Swimming in the ocean also helps to sooth and heal poison ivy. The salt is what helps. You can do this at home by making a paste with salt and cool water, apply it to the affected areas and gently rub it in. Let it stay on your skin for about 5-10 minutes then rinse off with cool water. It especially helps the itching and induces healing by drying out the blisters.
I find that this one works the best for me.

Good luck. Poison ivy can very irritating if you will excuse the pun.
