What’s the difference between EMT, EMS, and paramedic?
EMT – emergency medical tech
EMS – emergency medical services
paramedic
Part of your answer can be found in your expansion of the abbreviations: EMS is a service (actually a chain of services) providing emergency medical care (I will explain more about this later). An EMT is an emergency medical technician; that is, a person with a certain amount of medical training (this person is part of the EMS chain). A paramedic is also a person with a certain amount of medical training (and is also part of the EMS chain). The difference between an EMT and a paramedic is the amount of training required for each, and the level of medical care that each is allowed to perform. A paramedic requires more training, and has greater responsibilities (however, both EMTs and paramedics can serve in ambulances… or in police departments, fire departments, or even corporations).
The EMS chain begins with the person who first calls for help. The person who takes the call, usually an emergency response (9-1-1) operator, or a hospital receptionist, if you call the hospital directly, would be the second part of the chain. A trained First Responder, or someone trained in First Aid/CPR might come to assist if one is immediately available, and might even be the person who calls for help. An EMT and/or paramedic will then respond to give advanced care, and will prepare the victim for, and attend the victim during, transport to a hospital, if this is required. The doctors and nurses in the emergency room are at the top of the chain. The chain itself also includes any auxiliary services that aid in medical response (helicopter pilots and ambulance drivers, for example).
The rating of those who give medical care, from least trained to best trained are:
licensed First Aid providers
licensed CPR providers
First Responders
EMT- basic
EMT- advanced
Paramedics
Hospital emergency staff.
In some states, the EMT- advanced and Paramedics might be the same level.
