Habit Naturally
Can naturally disorganized people ever become organized?

I can’t seem to pull it together. I’m forgetful, usually late, lose things, and have trouble keeping on top of running a household. I have three kids under the age of three but it’s not because of them – I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember. All the books & hints I’ve found seem to come from people whose organization comes naturally, so when I try them I feel like I’m not just trying to change some habits, but my personality instead. Any help from someone who’s been there and found something that works?

Yes it is possible for naturally disorganized people to become organized.

I think the biggest mistake that disorganized people make when they are attempting to organize themselves is that they take an “all or nothing approach.” Trying to change everything about yourself, your habits and your natural tendencies all in one day is very overwhelming. Trying to change too much at one time is a recipe for disaster.

Here is what I suggest you do:

Spend some time thinking about the things that you would like to change. As you think of something, write it down to create a change wish list.

Try to keep your wish list very specific. For instance, don’t write “keep the house clean.” Instead, write things like “stay on top of the dishes,” “keep up with the laundry,” or “teach my children to pick up their own toys.”

The more specific the wish, the less overwhelming it will be when you attempt to make that specific change in your life. The more general the wish, the more likely it is that the change will be too shocking to your lifestyle, which increases the chance of failure.

Your wish list will really be an ongoing thing, but when you have a good start to it, let’s say 10 to 20 wishes, it’s time to start making some small changes.

Focus on one wish at a time. Pick the smallest wish on your list, the one that will require the least amount of change. Something like “keep up on the dishes,” is a good place to start.

Every day, remind yourself that your goal is to keep that kitchen sink clear of dirty dishes. When you finish a meal and you are tempted to just dump the dishes in the sink and move on to something else, remind yourself of your wish list and try to take the extra time to deal with the dishes.

Continue working on the dishes every day until it becomes second-nature. When you realize that you are keeping up with the dishes without ever having to remind yourself of your list, this is when you know it has now become a part of your natural routine. This is when you are ready to move on to another item from your wish list.

Continue working on your wish list, one small change at a time, until every item has become a natural part of your every-day routine.

You will be organized before you know it!

Why is it so hard to resist the temptation of chocolate? Because chocolate triggers the release of natural opiates in the brain. Cheese also releases mild opiates during digestion–no wonder we crave it. In…
