Ankle-Foot Orthosis or simply called AFO is basically made of lightweight plastic in polypropylen base in “L” shape form . The upright portion is behind the calf while the lower part is running under the foot and attached to the calf with a strap created to fit the shoes. The “L” shape design of the AFOs offers rigidity and on the other hand jointed ankle gives various types of control. They are also used to control the movement of the ankle and the lower leg due to arthritis and fracture.
AFO is also referred to as foot-drop brace because it is also used to correct foot drop. So, what’s a foot drop anyway? As they say, foot drop is “characterized by steppage gait”. Thus, when the person with foot drop walks, it drops down on the floor. This will aid to raise the foot high enough for the toe to do away from dragging and the slapping.
And what causes foot drop? It is basically caused by weakness in certain muscles located in the ankle and the foot. The affected muscles causes the downward and upward movement of the ankle and foot. It is also caused by different condition like dorsiflexor injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, stroke, neuropathies, drug toxicities or diabetes.
How’s foot drop being treated? Surgery is the best treatment but for some instances, it can be treated using special AFO orthotic braces that can give normal level of motion of the feet and ankle when walking. There is also a stimulation applied to the foot of the affected nerves when walking as the person’s foot is raised during a stride.

Conventional models are normally made of a durable material and give e a plate that slides into the shoes to maintain the foot level.
