Using a noise gate or sound reduction for live broadcasts?
I dj using virtual dj, and I would like to somehow use a noise gate or some sort of noise reduction software for my live broadcast other then the software that comes with my sound card and my microphone. Does anybody know what type of software I should be looking for and if so what is the name of the software. What I am trying to accomplish here is to have a clear sounding voice on air with little to no background noise/hiss. Any constructive or informational suggestions are welcome please.
There are some simple hardware tools out there you can use, but trying to mix software tools can lead to disappointments. I’d put one of the Behringer audio processors between your mic and audio input. For under $200 you can get something with a good limiter, compressor and noise gate. For a little bit more, a Symmetric 528E is one of the finest mic processors I’ve ever used. It has limiting, compression, noise gating, de-essing and good level controls for mic or line level input and output. I use a total of 28 of them at the 6 stations where I am Chief Engineer. MOST IMPORTANT is to have a clean signal going in, limit the background noise in your environment and start out clean so you don’t have as much to clean up. The more you mess with cleaning up, the worse your signal can get.
