Choosing the Right Strip Pole for Practice and Parties
You may not realize it, but there are a lot of factors to consider when you’re choosing a strip pole for practicing and private parties. Not all of them are made the same, and you may not realize that size does matter. Here are some things to look for.
Portability
If you plan on pole dancing for private parties with an agency or know you’ll be traveling a lot, you have to have a pole that can be taken apart and rebuilt. Weight is a factor in this. You may not be strong enough to comfortably carry a pole for longer walks, and you may have to climb stairs with it. Discretion may be a factor for you, as well.

Ease and Quickness of Construction
Most strip poles aren’t too complicated to put up, but you should definitely lean towards the ones that are the least complicated to build, especially for private parties. At all times, you want to seem like you know what you’re doing, and this can be especially hard if you’re nervous. Fumbling around with a complicated set up can only aggravate your nerves. There are also other benefits to easily erected poles.
Safety
An additional bonus of the simpler poles is that they tend to be more sturdy and safe than more complex ones. You could easily scratch your leg on a poor-quality multi-segment pole, and these poles tend to be less stable over time. Reliable stability is an extremely important factor in choosing the right strip pole.
It’s easy enough to ensure maximum stability if you’re only using your pole for practice at home. You can permanently install it and not worry about it falling over. The portable poles that you might use for private parties are a different matter. Naturally, you can’t drill them into rafters and you’ll want to avoid marking the ceilings and walls if you can help it. A good rule to observe is that the wider the base and the more securely the pole is fastened to it, the less likely you’ll accidentally fall over with it.
Size Matters
The size of your strip pole is a very important consideration. If you’re a smaller lady, it should be smaller in circumference than if you have a larger frame. You should be able to touch your thumb to your fingers comfortably around the strip pole, but on the same token, you don’t want it to be so small that it wouldn’t support your weight. Two inches in diameter is standard club size, but if this doesn’t comfortably work for you there are smaller diameters available.
Of course, the height of the pole is an important consideration. Ten feet may work in some cases, but many ceilings aren’t that high. A good all around length is about 8 or 9 feet. The better companies will offer poles in custom heights, so if you’re installing a permanent strip pole, break out the tape measure and find out exactly how much pole you need.
With these considerations, you can avoid many mistakes when you’re shopping for your personal strip pole. A quality pole will run several hundred dollars, but the investment in quality is worth it!
