Activities Suitable For The Preschool Years
Learning through play is what parents and guardians of young children learn when they first attend a preschool. Apart from the great social opportunity it is an intelligent way of promoting education. Children learn through having fun, following their interests and feel they are an important part of the little community. The social advantage is the varying degrees of development individual children go through.
At home, when parents are busy taking care of family needs, children may want to be seated in front of the graphic LCD monitor to watch their favorite children’s show. At preschool, no time is given for experiences that are not encouraging their physical involvement. Alone time is not frowned upon though as it is still part of learning about one’s self individually and in relation with others.
A stimulating activity that can be used to expand a child’s listening skills is the practice of music. Playing along to the dreadnought acoustic guitar with drums, tambourines, toy pianos and singing along with teacher, is a wonderful learning experience for the tiny tots. Anything that makes a sound can be used as a musical instrument for them to clash together or beat like a drum. To help them understand to respect instruments, adults need to demonstrate how to treat them. And remind the children with simple verbal instruction when they behave in a manner that is inappropriate.
Simply having the children involved at their own level of capability is enough to put a smile on their faces and make them feel like they are part of the group. Singing is an easy activity to arrange and can be done daily. A sing-a-long to a favorite children’s CD or modern music from an apt radio program will keep them happy and still learning. This type of activity offers development of cognition, physical pitch and hearing, social and large motor if dance and movement is involved.
The rooms for children to explore can have a multitude of exciting things ready and waiting for them to come and play. Blocks set up to appeal to the construction instincts of a preschooler will be dived upon by both boys and girls wanting to create. Towers and bridges and build ‘em up and knock ‘em down is a lot of fun. Their fine motor skills are helping develop the tiny muscles in their hands, they are focusing and coordinating eye and hand movement. Play-dough is another favorite activity that can be home made. Non toxic materials should be used as young children learn through putting everything in their mouth. Eating the play-dough and paints are a normal exploratory function of a preschooler.
Cut and paste, the old fashioned way without a computer, is an old favorite that has a variety of benefits for the child. Developing fine motor skills, expressing a sense of self, individuality and creative expression all happen at the arts and crafts table. To keep a set of scrapbooking tools on hand is a clever way for adults to get children engaged in play. Pre-cut magazine pictures, glue, a pair of children’s scissors, scraps of material and practically anything from the home can be a source of intelligent child’s play.
Assistance may be given to help the child if they are becoming frustrated but all attempts made by the child should be verbally praised. Sooner or later they will be able to do it for themselves, whatever they are trying to do. A child will grow and learn from every experience they have.
