There are strips of skin hanging off my pet turtle, is this ok?
My turtle is an African side necked turtle. I see what looks like strips of skin hanging off of his neck and arms. Is this a problem? Is it actually skin or is it like an algae or something because he is dirty? What should I do?

Many aquatic turtles regularly shed the outer layer of their skin and their shells. This is perfectly normal. Your turtle is not in danger, and you shouldn’t worry about it.
Snakes and lizards shed their skin regularly, however turtles have a slower growth rate and do not shed in the same way. Some small amount of visible shedding is not alarming, but any skin shedding that is prolonged or extensive is not really normal.
If you notice your turtle has been shedding for a while, I would recommend taking him/her to a vet. Excessive shedding can be caused by overfeeding or overheating. Since the problem of over shedding is common, many people mistakenly think that it is fine. Excessive shedding is not usually a serious problem, but still should not be considered “normal.” If you think this is the case, take your turtle to the vet BEFORE you change how often you feed your pet or adjust the temperature.
